Royal & Derngate, Northampton
From working on the bars and front of house, to Group Sales Co-ordinator and Marketing Officer, David worked his way up to Development Manager, responsible for securing the partnership funding for a £15m redevelopment alongside revenue fundraising from businesses, individuals and grant making trusts.
Belgrade Theatre, Coventry
Initially joining to secure the partnership funding for a £13m redevelopment, David also developed revenue income streams from business, individuals and trusts, developed a commercial income programme and ran the catering operation - generating £850k pa. David managed building projects, improving disabled access to the auditorium, and led on complex event management including Holocaust Memorial Day International Commemoration, the staging of Behud and ensuring the protection of free speech (see case study here by the index on censorship) and the internal (and highly confidential) launch of Coca-Cola's Share a Coke campaign.
Rosehill Theatre, Whitehaven
David joined to reopen Rosehill after a 2 year closure for a redevelopment. He had financial, HR and operational responsibility, ensuring establishing processes and procedures to ensure statutory compliance, alongside completing the capital project with snagging/defects and a final settlement with contractors. David also marketed the organisation and established a communications dept.
imagine if thetare company, Leeds
David worked with imagine if Theatre Company for 2 years as Strategic Development Director, supporting with fundraising and developing a strategic plan for the future direction of the company. He implemented financial and operational processes to ensure that the company was well placed for its future. Upon completion of the contract, David joined as a Trustee and now Chair's the theatre company. This has included navigating it through the very sad passing of its founding artistic director.
Theatre by the Lake, Keswick
David joined Theatre by the Lake as General Manager to support it during, and post-Covid closure. With responsibility for building operations, front of house, production, technical, fundraising and finance, David skilfully navigated a highly challenging period in the theatre's history, returning it to a stable footing after enormous turmoil.
Carlisle Youth Zone, Carlisle
David developed and implemented a comprehensive fundraising and income generation strategy to attract over £1m of funding pa. Working with the fundraising, youth work and leadership teams and with full engagement of trustees, the creation of the strategy gave clear direction, communication methodology and structure for the charity to realise secure income streams.
Freelancing over Covid
David first went freelance in January 2020, unaware of what was about to come! During the Covid pandemic, David supported four organisations with business planning, fundraising, securing £2.2m in Government support grants, interim Executive Director cover, staff restructuring and future strategic development in order to realise a future after Covid.
